Leica M10 and M11: how to check the shutter count

Draft. We are still testing both methods on our own Leica. If something works differently for you, let us know.

The Leica M10 and M11 do not store the shutter count in their DNG files, so a regular file-based counter shows nothing. There are two other ways.

Method 1: hidden menu (M10, M10-P, M10-R and M11)

  1. Open Menu → Camera Information → Regulatory Information.
  2. While holding Play, press on the D-pad: up, right, down, left, up.
  3. Release Play. Press and hold it again, then press: up, left, down, right, up.
  4. The screen shows the total shutter count and the battery condition.

Buying a used Leica? Ask the seller for a photo of this screen, or check it yourself when you pick it up.

Method 2: Leica M11 over USB-C

The M11 reports its statistics over USB: shutter count, operating time and power-on count. On a Mac, the open-source M11ShutterCount reads them. We are preparing a one-click Windows reader in the Reti program (it only sends read commands to the camera). We will release it after testing.

What next

The shutter count is not everything. Run the step-by-step camera check: sensor, dust, screen and rangefinder.

Sources: the menu code was described by users of Reddit r/Leica and by Notebookcheck. The USB method comes from M11ShutterCount (MIT licence). Reti brings it together in one place and is building a Windows version. Leica is a trademark of Leica Camera AG; Reti is not affiliated with it.
