Canon shutter count
Most Canons don't store the shutter count in their photos, so we read it straight from the camera over a USB cable. Choose the way that suits your computer and model. Reading is free and changes nothing in the camera.
In your browser
Chrome or Edge on a computer or an Android phone. Nothing to install. Windows needs the WinUSB driver, so there the program is easier.
Windows program
For almost every model in the list below. Unzip it and run ShutterCountCanon.exe. It installs nothing.
Program for older models
EOS 10D, 30D, 350D, 400D and 1D Mark III. It reads the count from the camera's service memory. The first time, you need to set up a driver once (instructions are in the ZIP).

Step by step
- Charge the battery. With a low battery, older cameras won't enter service mode.
- Turn off Wi-Fi on the camera, switch it on and connect it with a USB cable straight to the computer (no hub).
- Close EOS Utility, Lightroom and other apps that open the camera by themselves.
- Click “Connect to camera” in the browser or “Read the count” in the program.
- Save the result. You can add it straight to your listing report.
Questions and answers
Is reading safe?
Yes. The program and the page only read data: they take no pictures, change no settings and send nothing to a server.
Windows warns that the program isn't signed
That's normal for small programs. Click “More info”, then “Run anyway”.
Why do newer EOS R models show the count in steps of 1,000?
That's how the camera itself stores it. For the R6, R7 and similar you'll see, for example, “≤ 69,000”, meaning between 68,001 and 69,000.
What shutter count is high?
It depends on the model. Compare your result with the typical shutter life in the list of supported cameras.
